Book a hearing test

Booking a hearing test with Amplify Hearing is simple and stress-free. Whether this is your first appointment or a routine check-up, your audiologist will explain each step and give you plenty of time to ask questions.

Depending on your age, symptoms and hearing history, we’ll recommend either an initial hearing health check or a more comprehensive hearing assessment.

What to expect at your hearing test

Your appointment will be tailored to you, but it will usually include four straightforward steps.

A conversation about your hearing

We’ll begin by discussing your hearing, general health and any changes you or the people close to you may have noticed.

Your audiologist may ask about situations in which you find hearing difficult, such as following conversations, using the telephone, watching television or spending time in busy places. This helps us understand how your hearing may be affecting everyday life.

An examination of your ears

Your audiologist will use an otoscope to look carefully inside each ear. This allows them to check for ear wax, inflammation or anything else that could be affecting your hearing.

If we find something that may require medical attention or treatment before testing can continue, we’ll explain the appropriate next step.

A simple hearing assessment

During the hearing test, you’ll listen to sounds at different pitches and volumes, usually through headphones. You’ll respond whenever you hear a sound, even if it is very quiet.

The assessment is non-invasive and painless. All it requires is your attention and a simple response to the sounds you hear.

Depending on the type of appointment and your individual needs, additional assessments may be carried out to build a more complete picture of your hearing.

Clear results and recommendations

Your results will be available at the appointment. Your audiologist will explain them clearly and show you how your hearing is represented on a chart called an audiogram.

If hearing loss is identified, we’ll explain its type and level and discuss the next steps available to you. These might include monitoring your hearing, managing ear wax, seeking further medical advice or considering hearing aids.

There is no obligation to purchase hearing aids.

How long does a hearing test take?

An initial hearing health check is usually shorter than a comprehensive hearing assessment. A full assessment typically takes around an hour, although the precise appointment length will depend on the tests you need.

When you book, we’ll recommend the appropriate appointment and let you know how much time to allow.

Who can book a hearing test?

Amplify Hearing provides hearing tests for adults aged 18 and over. You do not usually need a referral from a GP or ENT specialist to book an appointment.

If you are under 55 and have not noticed any symptoms of hearing loss, we may recommend beginning with an initial hearing health check. This will help us decide whether a more comprehensive assessment is needed.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You are very welcome to bring a family member, friend or anyone else whose presence would make you feel more comfortable.

Someone who knows you well may also be able to describe hearing difficulties they have noticed and help you remember the information discussed during your appointment. The decision to bring someone is entirely yours.

Understanding your results

An audiogram records the quietest sounds you can hear at different pitches. It allows your audiologist to see whether you have hearing loss and, if so, whether it falls within a mild, moderate, severe or profound range.

We’ll explain what the results mean for you in practical, everyday terms. You will have time to ask questions, and we’ll make sure you understand any recommendations before your appointment ends.

What happens if hearing aids could help?

If your results suggest that hearing aids may help, your audiologist will talk you through the suitable options.

Recommendations will take account of:

  • Your individual hearing profile
  • The situations in which you want to hear more clearly
  • Comfort, appearance and ease of use
  • Rechargeability and connectivity
  • Your technology preferences
  • Your budget

As an independent hearing-care provider, Amplify Hearing offers access to devices from leading manufacturers. Our advice is based on your hearing and priorities rather than one particular brand.

Independent, unbiased advice

Where appropriate, your audiologist can demonstrate suitable hearing solutions and explain the differences between them. You will not be placed under any obligation to buy.

If you decide to proceed, your hearing aids will be ordered and a fitting appointment arranged. The timescale will depend on the model selected, particularly if your hearing aids are custom-made.

At your fitting, we’ll programme the hearing aids for your hearing profile, check their comfort and performance, and show you how to use and care for them.

What if I don’t need hearing aids?

Not everyone who has a hearing test needs hearing aids.

If hearing aids are not appropriate, your audiologist will explain whether any other action is recommended and when you should have your hearing checked again. Regular assessments allow us to monitor changes and give you advice on protecting your hearing.
